Snacking on peanuts or peanut butter at least five days a week can nearly halve the risk of a heart attack researchers at the Harvard Medical School have found. Nuts are thought to lower bad cholesterol, help reduce inflammation in the body and boost the health of blood vessels around the heart.

In their final report, published in the Journal of Nutrition, scientists said the risks surrounding heart disease were reduced by up to 44 per cent in regular snackers.

"Consumption of at least five servings a week of one ounce of nuts or one tablespoon of peanut butter was significantly associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease,' a spokesperson highlighted, but warned against eating nuts in isolation and those with a high salt or sugar content. "Always read the label, and remember that nuts are high in overall calories."
