Piling on the pounds shrinks the brain

24 August 2009

Piling on the pounds has an adverse affect on the mind as well as the waistline according to research from the University of California in Los Angeles. Lead author Paul Thompson reported that the brain's key cognition areas were found to be smaller and look sixteen years older in people who were obese when compared with their healthier counterparts. Thompson's research concluded that exercise which improves cardiovascular health and blood flow protects about the same amount of brain tissue that is lost in the obese.

"As these areas undergo the most remodelling throughout adult life," he suggested, "they may be more sensitive to any changes in oxygen supply and nutrients."
